Don Matteo and Natalina find the body of a man. The investigation will lead to Sabrina, an inmate girl who used work permits at the victim's factory. Don Matteo takes the girl's difficult story to heart and decides not to leave her alone. Meanwhile, in Spoleto it is a day of new arrivals: in the barracks it is the first day of Gualtiero Ferri, the new PM, while Lia's mother arrives at the Cecchini house. The Marshal and the captain do everything they can to ingratiate themselves with the rather severe woman. But Tommasi will have to deal with a terrible revelation ... Meanwhile, Tomas has problems with finance, and he doesn't seem to want to accept anyone's help.

When the man is found dying, the investigations begin. In the meantime, Cecchini is convinced that Captain Tommasi has made the teacher Marisa pregnant, and tries to run for cover, while Don Matteo returns to Sabrina in prison: he has managed to get her work permits back.
